« Our priority is our free platform »

Friday afternoon, the International Classic Film Market, directed by Juliette Rajon, welcomed Manuel Alduy, Director of Cinema at France Télévisions for the first time. He answered questions that the profession is asking about the group's strategy towards heritage films.

Priority to classics on channel France 5

For us, heritage films are works that are at least twenty years old. Since I arrived at France Télévisions, we have developed a system for showcasing films in general, offering a range of screenings consistent with the audience of each of our channels. However, in the name of our love of classics - I discovered the Western on channel France 3 as a child - we are not going to broadcast a classic film for an audience that we know will not want to watch it. Across all our channels, we offer 350 films a year, 40% of which are heritage films. With the forthcoming change in legislation, we can imagine that France 5 will broadcast exclusively "old movies", as young people sometimes call them.

Priority to our free platform

The free France.tv platform is our priority, because it is our best bet to appeal to younger viewers - who watch very little ‘traditional’ television - without losing the older demographic.

A logic of related content

We are working on the platform’s editorialisation, which will follow real life events - for example by broadcasting ‘Big Fish’ the day after the opening of the festival or by programming films linked to the history of the Cannes Film Festival, as we plan to do again next year. For Halloween, we will be looking at niche communities and scheduling a lineup of horror films from 10pm. The idea is to create a pattern through these new events.
