What a great idea: to open the festival with a joyful, touching, inventive film, where we progressively fall in love with all the characters. And what's more, it was shot in Lyon! Since its presentation out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, screened in front of a star-studded crowd gathered for the 75th anniversary of the event, The Innocent, Louis Garrel's fourth film, has continued to charm audiences. The press is delivering well deserved praise, and moviegoers have been celebrating it since Wednesday.

It should be noted that this police comedy, led by a quartet of actors (Louis Garrel, Noémie Merlant, Roschdy Zem and Anouk Grinberg) has it all: adventure, suspense, romance - and tons of humour. Louis Garrel has long excelled in playful roles (such as in DNA or Dans Paris). His penchant for wit reaches its peak here in an amusing and expertly directed robbery scene, where the lovers, sprouting falsehoods, end up telling each other the truth. The Innocent is solid proof of the vitality of French cinema.
