"In 1929, I ventured into directing with Dans la nuit, which was described as a fantasy-horror film (a character has his face half torn off and wears a mask). Then talkies were invented. The promoters decided to wait to release my film until the ruckus surrounding this novelty had subsided. They thought it wouldn't last. They were wrong. My silent picture was finally released in a rush. I had really wanted to be a director. Maybe my life would have been different. But as an actor I was earning a good living and didn't have to face any difficulties. So, I gave up. I did my job as an actor without any problems."
Charles Vanel, filmmaker of one film (in Le Monde, 1979)
