« In high school I played the drums. Quite badly... but I was still able to play a rough version of ‘Tinroof Blues’, which I wouldn't be able to do today. I got interested in jazz when I was thirteen. Back then, I bought all the albums by Bud Powell. For me, the three great discoveries were Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong and John Ford. There are many similarities between them, especially the last two. They have been criticised for their excessive sentimentality. Wrongly, in my opinion. It was through them that I discovered cinema and jazz. I learned a lot of things that way.»
Bertrand Tavernier, jazz lover, in ‘Positif’ (1986)
