Live for Life, 1967 © DR
Is it ever really over in a relationship when your name is Claude Lelouch? Certainly not, especially when you’re talking about the 1970s with artists such as Annie Girardot, Candice Bergen and Yves Montand, and when the brilliant music composer Francis Lai is practically writing the dialogue. ‘Live for Life’ is a soaring, seductive, instinctive, intelligent, double adventure, depicting a pair of adults who struggle tremendously to channel their emotions, in conflict with their inner nature. Yves Montand is formidable as a war reporter who lives life to the fullest and is affected by every woman around him with a certain dishonest lightness. He lets himself be filmed without a fuss, all about his cigarettes tucked inside his hand, like guys who want to avoid being detected.
Opposite him, Annie Girardot, with her perfect asymmetrical look, radiates sophisticated beauty. Between the two, the spectacularly lovely Candice Bergen is a temptation that Lelouch takes care to define well, that of the young, clever girl who won't let herself be fooled. Nothing is neglected in this sensitive, cruel and adventurous work, where "Life goes on" seems to be exhaled with every breath of the three main characters.
