In the late 1980s, a close-knit American family travels endlessly across the United States. What differentiates it from the norm is that the parents are both activists who have been wanted for years by the FBI. Their escape soon faces an unavoidable problem: their teenage son wants his freedom. Running on Empty is an exceptional film. Exceptional because of the nature of its subject, which is very rare in American cinema. Exceptional in its approach, choosing an overtly political motif, as seen solely through the prism of private life. This story, unlike any other, experienced from the inside, draws us permanently into the heart of this family unit composed of people who share a remarkable rapport.

Concentrating on his story, Sidney Lumet accumulates good artistic ideas, making the common point an unpredictable narrative of an intangible subject: a film of creeping suspense. The soundtrack by Tony Mottola accompanies the characters, who are in a perpetual state of flight, with a few discreet, controlled and melodious chords on the acoustic guitar. The ‘anti-glamourous’ cast (Christine Lahti, Judd Hirsch, River Phoenix...) proves to be deeply touching in their bond and affection. The great gentleness that permeates the ensemble only reinforces the relevance of political reflection on commitment, fidelity to an ideal, and the visceral and unreasonable desire to live like others, making Running on Empty a magnificent and moving work.
